Resources for Sites & Clinical Educators

There are many rewarding ways to contribute to clinical education in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology. We welcome CASLPO registered Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) at all stages of their careers to support student placements, facilitate teaching clinics, laboratories and simulations, and participate in other experiential learning activities. 

Clinical educators play a crucial role in preparing the next generation of SLPs. To facilitate student placements, clinicians must be registered with CASLPO and have a minimum of two years of professional experience. Recent graduates with fewer than two years of experience are encouraged to become involved through teaching clinics, laboratory facilitation, simulations, and other educational opportunities, providing valuable opportunities to gain teaching experience.  

We provide resources and support to help you succeed as a clinical educator and make a meaningful impact on student learning. 

What is InPlace? 
InPlace is the clinical placement management software used by the Department of Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Education Program. Site coordinators and Clinical Educators are given access to InPlace to submit placement offers, manage student placements, and communicate placement information using a centralized platform.

InPlace Accounts

• For Site Coordinators: InPlace accounts are created for Site Coordinators to submit and manage placement offers.  An email from ot.slp.clinicalplacements@utoronto.ca (no-reply email) with a link will be shared to activate the account and create a new password.  
• For Clinical Educators: Clinical Educators (CEs) do not require an InPlace account. During a student's placement, CEs use InPlace to review and approve placement hours and complete student placement assessments. Access to these functions is provided through links associated with each student's placement record, which are shared by email during the placement period. 

Submitting Placement Offers 

Placement offers are submitted through InPlace. Site coordinators use InPlace to submit and manage placement opportunities, update offer details, and review submissions throughout the academic year. Please refer to the InPlace Offer Submission Tipsheet to guide users through account setup, offer submission, and completion of required placement information. 

Clinical Education Placement Schedules

Teaching clinics and clinical skills laboratories provide valuable opportunities for clinical educators to share their expertise, support student learning, and contribute to clinical education. Participation is welcomed from all educators and may be particularly appealing to clinicians who are unable to supervise students in a traditional placement setting or who are new to clinical education. As a facilitator, you will guide small-group discussions, foster peer learning, and support students in developing their clinical reasoning and professional skills.

Earn CASLPO Continuous Learning Activity Credits (CLACs) Clinical Education Recognition Program: 

• $10 per placement day, per student for participating placement sites. 

• Bonus for paired and group placements  

• CASLPO fee reimbursement for up to 6 clinical educators facilitating placements every academic year using randomized selection.  

• $30 gift cards for facilitators for every 3 clinical skills laboratories and/or teaching clinics recognizing substantial contributions to clinical education.

• The Canadian Assessment of Clinical Competence- Assessment Tool for Student Placements 

The Canadian Assessment of Clinical Competence (ACC) is the national tool used to assess speech-language pathology students during clinical placements. Based on entry-to-practice competencies, it supports clinical educators in assessing student performance, providing feedback and fostering professional growth throughout the placement experience. It was developed collaboratively by the Canadian Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education (CACCE) and is based on the Canadian National Competency Profile for SLP required for entry-to-practice in Canada.
