Awards & Financial Assistance
Funding your education is important. Explore scholarships, bursaries, and loan options available to MHSc students:
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
The OGS program recognizes academic excellence in graduate studies and offers awards of $5,000 per term (up to $15,000 for three terms). Applications are submitted online to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and are typically due in mid-March. Master’s students may hold OGS for a maximum of two years. Recipients are notified in July.

Department Bursaries
Students may apply for bursary funding based on demonstrated financial need. Applications require a financial statement outlining annual resources and expenses and are adjudicated by the Graduate Coordinator.
Available bursaries include:
- Faculty of Medicine Professional Master’s Financial Aid Bursary
- Department Bursary Program, which draws from funds such as:
- Speech Foundation of Ontario
- Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) Awards
- Harmonize for Speech OSOTF Award
- McGeachy Estate OSOTF Award
- Ross Pierce Memorial Scholarship
- M. L. Stoicheff Alumni Bursary* (*adjudicated by the Alumni Association)

Entrance Awards
The department offers scholarships to incoming MHSc students based on academic achievement. Awards are granted by the Admissions and Awards Committee so no application is required. Recipients are notified with their offer of admission.
Awards include:
- Donalda J. McGeachy Memorial Scholarship – One award for an incoming Year 1 student with an excellent academic record.
- Harmonize for Speech Entrance Awards – Two awards for incoming Year 1 students with excellent academic records.
- Barbara Meissner-Fishbein Memorial Award – Awarded to an incoming Year 1 student based on academic achievement and financial need.

Convocation Awards
Each November, awards are presented to graduating MHSc students in recognition of academic excellence, clinical achievement, and professional contributions. These include:
- Sandra Henderson Award for Clinical Excellence – For the highest average across all clinical units.
- SAC Student Excellence Award – For an outstanding future professional; peer nominations and application required.
- UHN–TRI Patient Quality of Life Award – For improving quality of life for individuals with aging-related or life-changing conditions.
- Harmonize for Speech Excellence Awards – Two awards for the highest overall academic and clinical averages.
- University Health Network Prize – For the highest average in Units 6 and 7.
- Paula Square Award of Excellence – For the highest average in Unit 8.
- Tavistock Trust for Aphasia Student Prize – For the highest mark in the aphasia course.

Other Awards
Several additional awards are available to incoming and current MHSc students, recognizing academic achievement, financial need, and special contributions. These include:
- SGS University-Wide Awards – Department-nominated awards managed by the School of Graduate Studies.
- Chris Gandy International Outreach Award – For Year 1 students completing an international or northern Canadian placement.
- Jean F. Walker Award – Based on academic achievement and financial need.
- Glennie/Cizman Scholarship – For students entering the MHSc program after time in the workforce.
- American Women’s Club Scholarship – For Year 1 students, based on academic achievement and financial need.
- Harmonize for Speech Textbook Award – Provides a free textbook to Year 1 students.
- Year 2 Awards – Includes SAC Scholarship, Margaret Stoicheff Awards, Harmonize for Speech Graduate Scholarship, and prizes for excellence in specific areas such as developmental speech, audiology, and child language.
