The Department of Speech-Language Pathology kicked off Speech & Hearing Month with energy and pride at the second annual SLP Clinical Research Day, held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the University of Toronto’s MacLeod Auditorium. Students, faculty, staff, and special guests came together to celebrate the outstanding research and academic accomplishments within the communication sciences community.
The event spotlighted the capstone research projects of second-year MHSc students, with topics spanning pediatric care, adult communication disorders, and dysphagia, showcasing the breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary nature of the field. These presentations reflected not only the academic excellence of the program but also its real-world clinical relevance.
The day opened with inspiring remarks from Department Chair Dr. Rosemary Martino and Associate Professor Dr. Deryk Beal, setting the tone for a celebration of leading-edge research, collaboration, and student excellence.
This year’s event also recognized the remarkable achievements of students who received prestigious awards, including the King Charles III Medal and Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) Student Achievement Awards. In addition, the department paid tribute to the outstanding service and careers of two retiring team members: faculty member Lynn Ellwood and long-time departmental secretary Antonietta Morra.
A true highlight of the day was a live keynote conversation with Professor Aura Kagan, a globally recognized leader in aphasia and the first speech-language pathologist appointed to the Order of Canada. As a U of T alum and director at the Aphasia Institute of Toronto, Professor Kagan’s insights and trailblazing work in person-centered care left a lasting impression on attendees and underscored the impact of clinical research on practice.
The 2025 SLP Clinical Research Day was a resounding success, offering an inspiring platform to recognize student scholarship, build community, and reflect on the department’s continued leadership in communication sciences.
A heartfelt thank you to all who attended, to our presenters, and to the staff and volunteers for organizing another outstanding event!
