Oral Dynamics Laboratory

ODL_logo-header

The Oral Dynamics Lab (ODL) is a research laboratory in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Toronto. Founded by Pascal van Lieshout, the ODL conducts groundbreaking research in speech science and oral motor control.

Mission

Research in the ODL aims at studying, describing and explaining the mechanisms involved in the control of oral motor function as related to normal and disordered speech and swallowing in human subjects across the lifespan.

Research areas (keywords)

Oral motor control; speech production; dynamical systems theory; speech errors; sensory motor interaction; Gestural Phonology; speech disorders; swallowing; speech science

Target populations

Children and adults, including individuals with speech and/or swallowing disorders (apraxia of speech, Parkinson’s disease, fluency disorders; dysphagia)

Available resources/facilities

  • 3D Electromagnetic Articulographs (EMA)
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Electro-glottography (EGG)
  • Respitrace
  • Electropalatography (EPG)
  • force measuring equipment (ELF)
  • acoustic analysis (Praat)
