Facilities
The Oral Dynamics Lab is dedicated to research in the area of oral motor control. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to record and process physiological and physical aspects of speech and swallowing. The main pieces of equipment used in a variety of studies include:
- 3D Electromagnetic Articulograph (EMA)
- Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS; 3D video motion analysis system)
- Electromyography (EMG)
EMG: Electromyograph records the electrical activity of muscles involved in speech and swallowing.
- Electroglottography (EGG)
EGG: Two-channel electroglottograph with microphone and preamplifier. Records the degree of vocal cord contact during phonation.
- Respitrace
Respitrace: Inductive plethysmography non-invasively measures respiratory kinematics.
- Electropalatography (EPG)
EPG: Electropalatography records tongue-palate contacts.
- force measuring equipment (ELF)
ELF: Economic Load and Force system measures static forces of lips, jaw, or tongue.
- acoustic analysis (Praat)
PRAAT: Acoustic analysis program developed by Boerma & Weenink, 1998. Click here to download a tutorial written by Dr. Van Lieshout that introduces the basic functions.
- Biofeedback System (Thought Technology Infiniti)
Infiniti: Capable of simultaneously tracking skin conductance/temperature, respiration, EMG, electrocardiography (ECG, EKG) and blood volume pulse (BVP). Click here to visit the manufacturer’s website.
