MHSc Funding
All applicants to the MHSc program should budget very carefully to ensure that they have adequate funding for two years of study before they enrol in the program. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships, student loans, and lines of credit wherever possible. The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is a prestigious merit-based award. If you have achieved at least an A- (or equivalent) in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent) or have completed two years of graduate studies at the time of application with an overall average of at least A- (or equivalent), we highly recommend applying prior to mid-March 2024.
Estimated Costs
Tuition and Living Expenses
Single, independent students living in residence or sharing an apartment should budget at least $25,000.00 per year – this estimate includes tuition, fees, books, academic supplies, computer and internet, accommodation, food, transportation, and entertainment. The intense nature of the MHSc program does not allow students to work in the summer between years one and two.
Clinical Placement Costs
Students may incur up to $3,000 of additional expenses associated with clinical placements outside of Toronto. Students can expect to have at least one placement outside of the Greater Toronto Area during the two years of the program.
Financial Aid
Loans, Scholarships, and Bursaries
Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for government loans and major academic scholarships [e.g., Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), etc.]. Please visit the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) website for full details on funding opportunities for graduate students. Please note however, there is limited funding available for professional master’s students and most of the available funding is bursary support that is based on the financial needs of individual students.
Financial support offered to MHSc students through the Department of Speech-Language Pathology is detailed in the Student Handbook and in the Awards and Financial Assistance section of the website. Applications are solicited by the department as appropriate throughout the program.
Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program recognizes academic excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels in all disciplines of academic study. The OGS program at the University of Toronto is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario and the University of Toronto.
Applications and supporting documents must be submitted through the School of Graduate Studies’ (SGS) online application system. The Department of Speech-Language Pathology will then nominate selected students to receive an OGS award. Nominations are communicated to SGS who will then complete the adjudication process and notify recipients of their status.
Important note for prospective students: Students must submit an OGS application to each institution for which they are seeking admission. Ontario Graduate Scholarship awards are no longer transferable from one university to another.
Completed applications for the 2022 – 2023 academic year are due no later than Monday, March 14, 2022. In July, SGS will notify recipients and provide further details about how to activate and manage the award.
