2017 SLP Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Deryk Beal has been awarded the Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award. The award was announced at the Department’s Annual Awards Ceremony on November 17th.
Deryk is an assistant professor (status) in the Department of Speech-Language pathology at the University of Toronto and a clinician-scientist at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Canada’s largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital). Deryk is a graduate of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Toronto two times over – first from the clinical Master’s program and later from the doctoral training program. Deryk is an internationally recognized expert in the neurobiology of speech and language and the treatment of communication disorders. He has published in high impact and prestigious journals including NeuroImage, Cortex, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, and the Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research and has over 120 conference presentations and abstracts. He has secured over $1 million in research awards and grants including CIHR, NSERC and CFI. Deryk has trained many speech-language pathologists and speech scientists to date who have progressed to successful careers in education, rehabilitation, medicine, technology and academia. His work has been profiled in national and international media including the Globe and Mail, Radio Canada, CBC and BBC.
